The Advertsing Club of St. Louis asked its members for unusual “Addy Memories,” referring to the club’s annual St. Louis Addy Awards show for advertising and marketing. I have nothing BUT unusual Addy memories, and so I was happy to raise my hand and share a couple of them. Warning: red underwear is involved. Lucky red underwear.
By the way, these intertwined stories are true. I won my first of four “Best of Show” Addys in 1988 for a single sheet of paper, a Microsoft Word doc. The “Warm, Personal Letter” was a one-pager introducing my business to friends and prospects. I guess the judges found it funny: it won a Gold in self-promotion, a Gold in print collateral, then (shockingly to me) that night’s Best of Show. Accepting the latter, I had to wing an unprepared speech in front of 1,500 people at Powell Symphony Hall. The red underwear remark was improv that grew into something… weirder.

Walt Jaschek and his long-time friend and creative collaborator Paul Fey, writers and producers of funny radio commercials, were inducted into the St. Louis Media Hall of Fame at a gala ceremony in downtown St. Louis on March 17, 2018.
The St. Louis Media History Foundation inducted 20 other individuals into the St. Louis Media Hall of Fame that night, as well. More than 200 people attended the gala. (See the full list of the St. Louis Media Hall of Fame 2017 Inductees on LinkedIn.)
Said the Foundation: “Individually and together, Paul and Walt have reputations for creating high-impact, industry-admired advertising campaigns. They teamed up in 1991 to create Paul & Walt Worldwide, the radio commercial boutique agency and production company. With offices in Hollywood and St. Louis, their work quickly won CLIOS, ADDYs and many other awards for national brands.”
Paul is now President and Chief Creative Officer of World Wide Wadio in Hollywood. Walt is now writer of comics and comedy here at Walt Now. Both men continue to collaborate frequently.

“Let Loose the Large” was the theme of my presentation on thinking big in copywriting, unleashed to a lecture hall filled with media and advertising students at the University of Missouri – St. Louis 4/13/12.
“Let Loose the Large.” Meaning: make a large list of large ideas; pick the largest one; use your large powers to make it a large reality; and be the largest version of yourself you can imagine.
The students (a fun subset pictured, playing with some props I brought,) seemed to enjoy this combination of pep talk, process peeks and portfolio pieces. The questions were smart; the connections, invigorating. After, I received this nice certificate from UMSL’s Dr. Kristy Tucciarone, head of the advertising program in the College of Fine Arts and Sciences.
